That’s GREAT!

Applied Behavior Analysis: a definition

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is first and foremost a science.

This can make it a little bit intimidating when approaching ABA for the first time. The scientific jargon combined with the abundance of acronyms like DTT, TA, DRO, can leave one’s head spinning.

To that end, we wanted to get started with a  basic definition that strips away the scientific complexity. The way that we define ABA for the newcomer is:

ABA is a discipline which takes principles from the science of behavior analysis and applies them to humans in order to make socially significant changes.

Ok… good to know. But what does that really mean? And why should we care?

To answer those questions, we’re going to take a closer look at what it means to be Applied, Behavioral, and Analytic

Let’s get started by exploring what it means for a discipline to be Applied.

Advanced definitions:

“Applied behavior analysis is the science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for behavior change” – Cooper, Heron & Heward, “Applied Behavior Analysis”, 2020
